Although also called Dracula Castle, Bran Castle did not belong to Dracula. But is nonetheless a beautiful and interesting site to visit. In fact, alongside Peles Castle and Corvin Castle, it is in the top 3 most beautiful castles in Romania that we visit on most of our guided tours in Romania.
In fact, not only Dracula is a fictional character, Bran Castle had little to no link to the actual Walachian Prince, Vlad the Impaler, the man the famous vampire is linked to. He only passed briefly through Bran, the settlement surrounding the castle, in order to attack the nearby city of Brasov.

But looking at the marvelous structure, an eerie sight, it is easy to understand why the beautiful castle was linked to the blood-thirsty vampire. Built on a steep cliff with incredible views over the surroundings, Bran Castle is a fortress constructed by the Teutonic Knights. It served as a customs point and point of vantage against the Ottoman Empire’s expansion. At the beginning of the 19th century, it lost its military role and became an administrative seat. Later it became a favorite spot for Queen Maria of Romania and converted into a royal summer residence.

During Second World War, her daughter, Ileana, converted it into a hospital for the wounded soldiers. Now the castle is a museum that attracts many travelers to the area. It draws people in with Dracula’s story but wins them over with beautiful architecture and incredible landscape.
